21-Jun-2017 LifeBoat   This 1944 Alfred Hitchcock classic is a rarely seen film about the Battle of the Atlantic.  We have not shown this film before.

In the Atlantic during WWII, a ship and a German U-boat are involved in a battle and both are sunk. The survivors from the ship gather in one of the boats. They are from a variety of backgrounds: an international journalist, a rich businessman, the radio operator, a nurse, a steward, a sailor and an engineer with communist tendencies. Trouble starts when they pull a man out of the water who turns out to be from the U-boat.

Midway   starring Charlston Heston, Henry Fonda (as Admiral Nimitz), James Colburn, Robert Mitchum (as Admiral Bull Halsey), Glenn Ford (as Admiral Raymond Spruance) and Hal Holbrook (as Commander Joe Rochefort) tells the story of the months after Pearl Harbor, the intelligence triumph that revealed Japanese intentions for the "decisive battle", the ambush set by Nimitz and the US naval victory at Midway that was the turning point of the Pacific War.

The Battle of Britain

Historical reenactment of the air war in the early days of World War II (Jul to Sep 1940) for control of the skies over Britain as the German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force determine whether or not an invasion can take place.

The film has many stars you will recognize, e.g., Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Harry Andrews, Kurt Jergens, Ian McShane, Kenneth More, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Suzanna York and Robert Fox.  It is a pretty good film with decent “action”.

NOTE:  this film is significant because it required a number of air-worthy WWII war birds (which were not generally available) and helped start the war bird restoration phenomena.

20-Sep-2017 Guadacanal Diary

The first major ground offense by US forces in WWII.   The story of the US Marine invasion task force bound for Guadacanal in the Solomons as seen through the eyes of a war correspondent.  Good cast.

18-Oct-2017 Casablanca

One of the best films of all time (on everyone's top 10 list); a film you can see again and again and never tire of it.  Lots more ...

There is some possibility that Oct will be an open house.  We will show Casablanca anyway because it is such a great film and unless you have seen it 50 times, you should show up.

21-Nov-2017 Monthly topic is Home Front; movie isTBD

The Pianist

This very highly rated film stars Adrien Brody as a Polish Jewish musician struggling to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II.  An excellent film that has not received the recognition it deserves.

Stalingrad (1993) Poster

Stalingrad.  This German film follows a small group of German soldiers from the relaxing environment of the Italian coast to the horrors of the Eastern Front and Stalingrad in particular.

Previously Shown

Paris 1919   This award winning film expertly blends re-enactments with archival footage to transport you to one of the most important summit meetings of the 20th Century.  The film chronicles an extraordinary event that dissolved empires, redrew maps, engineered the Treaty of Versailles, and created far-reaching consequences that led directly to WWII and continue to afflict and trouble our world today.

Evening of WWII Music

15-Feb-2017 Stalin    This 3-time Golden Globe winning film depicts the life and career of the brutal Soviet dictator, Josef Stalin.  Duval is excellent as Stalin (the physical resemblance is amazing).
15-Mar-2017 Victory At Sea.  Selected episodes (Pacific Theatre) from this award winning series

The Longest Day

John Wayne, Eddie Albert, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum and many others you will recognize star in this 1962 oscar-winning dramatization of D-Day.  The film tells the story of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII with good detail and accuracy (not perfect but quite good). There are dozens of characters, some seen only briefly, who together weave the story of five separate invasion points that made up the operation as seen from both the Allied and German points of view.
